Showing our patriotism is so important for many of us and we love our flag, don’t you know. There are so many American Flag DIY decor ideas out there, but this rag flag placemat made from bandanas has got to be one of my all-time favorites. Bandanas are as American as apple pie, hot dogs, and baseball in my books and they look amazing turned into a flag placemat, for sure. I am going to use these flag placemats on my patio all Summer long for the family outdoor cookouts I have planned and I know they are not only going to bring color to my outdoor oasis, but they will be a constant reminder of how grateful I am to be a citizen of the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Materials:
- Bandanas (2 red bandanas, 1 white bandana, and 1 blue bandana)
- Some white flannel fabric (you can also use batting or fleece)
- Some red fabric (for backing, you could also use denim)
- An ironing board
- An iron
- A sewing machine
- Thread (in either red, white, or blue)
Directions:
This video tutorial by Scrappy Patch is so easy, you just cut all your strips, that is the bandanas, the flannel, and the backing and sandwich them together, then clip or pin them in place.
Then you will just sew one seam down the middle of each of your flag strip stacks you have sandwiched together and then you attach them all with a quarter-inch side seam. To achieve the raggedy look, you will make little incisions outside the seam join about a half-inch apart then machine wash and dry.
The more you wash these, the fluffier and softer they will become.
