Take a Virtual Safari through Kruger National Park for a bit of Happy

Going a bit crazy staying at home? Take a virtual safari with us to spot some beautiful wildlife in South Africa’s famous Kruger Park.
No, it’s not real time! It’s from our last visit about a year ago. With the world and our lives in turmoil with Coronavirus a bit of happy is very much in order. Grab a cup of tea and sit back as you take a virtual safari with us.

We start our day before sunrise. The Crocodile Bridge Gate opens at dawn and were ready to spot some wildlife driving our trusty old Land Rover.
Our first sighting… a lone Giraffe and his passengers. How many Oxpeckers do you see enjoying ‘breakfast’?

A bit hard to determine in the light of dawn. We’re no experts, but it appears to be a Tawny Eagle watching for his breakfast.

The sun begins to brighten up the bush.

There’s just something about silhouetted trees isn’t there?

More Giraffe. A curious youngster. See his passenger?

And mum… and of course, her own very own oxpeckers.

A drive in the Kruger is never complete without seeing Impala. What’s this with all these Oxpeckers?

Unless really close these Black-Bellied Bustards are hard to spot. Unless they’re vocalizing of course.

A Warthog.

Must be time for a mid morning nap! This lone Wildebeest is enjoying the warm sunshine.

In the Kruger National Park you can only get out of your vehicle in designated areas. This is at a hide.

Spending time in a hide is both peaceful and exciting.

You never know what you’ll spot in a hide. We sure weren’t expecting this Boom Slang right next to the viewing area.

A Lilac Breasted Roller. A bit more serene to spot.

Then there’s always a Crocodile!

Once on the road again we spot Zebra.

A lone Elephant bull. Best to keep our distance.

Along the river we find the most wildlife today.



Even one of our favorite… the Goliath Heron. The largest heron.

Right there fishing from the bridge we find a Giant Kingfisher.

Moving away from the river we spot a Vulture nest.

Its getting warm now. This Kudu bull is resting and chewing his cud in the semi shade.

A Spotted Hyena also escaping the heat.

We reach Skukuza Camp and its time for us to have some lunch in the shade.

A few weeks ago tourism in Africa came to a screeching halt due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Long awaited African Safaris were canceled and visitors and volunteers fled the continent.

How is the Covid-19 Pandemic impacting Africa’s wildlife?

For some wildlife the break from the endless gawking of tourists may be very welcome. Cheetah, lions, elephants and leopards frequently deal with hoards of tourists crowding them. Excited onlookers in safari vehicles press in for that unique chance to capture that coveted photo.
Though most tourists are respectful of the animals, after all we’re in their home now, some are not. Like us humans, it doesn’t feel good when our personal space is invaded.
So, for some wildlife the lack of tourists may feel really good.

However, for others, the absence of people may spell trouble.
What are the downsides for the wildlife being left alone for a season? If the wild places were really wild places things might be different. However, we’ve interfered with nature more than we may realize, even in Africa.

With the tourists and volunteers gone poaching just got easier. For one, the sheer presence of hundreds of people keeps poachers at bay. Now with the money from tourism dried up where do the funds to pay the anti-poaching rangers come from? In some reserves the anti-poaching teams are funded by tourism dollars. Luckily in others ranger scouts are supported via donations. Like Lynn’s team in Malawi.
Either way, there has never been a better time to send some money along to help protect elephant, rhino, pangolin and other vulnerable wildlife from poachers.

Elephants and other wildlife used to migrate up and down the African continent in search of food and water. Today the movement of these wild animals is limited by fences and human activity.
In many reserves water is either hauled in or pumped from bore holes to fill the water holes. During times of economic stress and upheaval like with the Covid-19 Pandemic providing water may possibly fall by the wayside.

Although feeding the wildlife is strictly prohibited in most Game Reserves and National Parks, it still happens. Monkeys, hyenas and birds hang around picnic areas and camp grounds. They watch for any morsels of food dropped or left behind.
Unfortunately, some visitors toss chunks of meat or left overs into the bush. Some feel they’re doing the wild animals a favor, while others enjoy enticing them closer. At one camp we had hyena come right along the camp perimeter to snatch the meat our ‘neighbors’ had tossed through the fence for them.
When the humans are gone some of these wild animals have become so accustom to being fed they may hang around until they starve.

How is the Covid-19 Pandemic impacting Africa’s wildlife?

Looks like it a bit of good and bad. However, listening to the wildlife experts the wildlife poaching is bound to pick up as local villagers go hungry. Others suggest that the wildlife trafficking syndicates will take advantage and ramp up.

Whatever reality is… wildlife and those who protect and preserve it deserve our help.

Ionescu is no stranger to lacing up the brand’s sneakers, as Oregon is backed by Nike.

Nike Pulls USA Flag-Themed Sneaker Amid Controversy About Its Symbolism

Nike has pulled an American flag-themed sneaker created to celebrate the upcoming Fourth of July holiday.

The Air Max 1 USA was scheduled for release this week ahead of Independence Day. Printed at the heel of the shoe was an American flag with 13 white stars set in a circle — an early design of the United States flag commonly called the “Betsy Ross flag,” which was created during the American Revolution in the 1770s and represents the 13 original colonies.

“Nike has chosen not to release the Air Max 1 Quick Strike Fourth of July as it featured an old version of the American flag,” a Nike spokesperson told FN.
